The local town of Villebois-Lavalette, is a 5 minute drive away, it has all usual facilities, a supermarket and petrol station, several
restaurants, boulangerie and banks. A fresh produce market is held on Saturday morning
under the magnificent Les Halles. Les Halles is a large covered
structure, the roof, pictured above, supported by massive oak beams
resting on stone columns.
On
up the hill from Les Halles, is the Eglise. From this vantage point
there is a magnificent view over Villebois, its communes and surrounding countryside.
Further
on up this pretty, narrow street is the Chateau, parts dating
from the 12th century. The chateau has been under restoration for a
number of years, its an impressive fortress and well worth a visit,
tours are now available in english on certain days, further details
available from the Office de Tourisme.
The
beautiful region of the Dordogne is just 5km from us, with its historic
towns, rural villages and ancient chateaux that are all worthy of
exploration.

Within easy travelling distance is the town of Brantome,
35km, known as the Venice of the Dordogne. Many interesting craft shops
and boutiques, beautiful monastic buildings, cafes, art galleries etc.
There is also a fabulous market held in the town every Friday morning,
ideal for picking up those holiday gifts.
The river runs through the town, so there are numerous bridges, waterfalls, lush green parks with shady trees.
The kids can enjoy bike riding and canoeing.
There are also a number of 'grottos' in this rocky area, all well worth a visit.
Visit some of the local Cognac and wine producers. Le Maine Gerard at
Champagne Vigny makes an interesting afternoon trip, with a talk in
English explaining how the still works.
There is an open-air swimming pool at Gardes La Pontaroux, open throughout the season with picnic area and cafeteria.
